Space is where humanity will fulfill its potential and flower, for that is where our real future will be lived.
Harold Egeln "Home Reporter" Newspaper, HEgeln@webtv.net

Survival - and not just in a few billion years when the sun becomes a red giant. Our environment, technology, agriculture, economy are increasingly becoing less diverse and prone to single point failure. September 11, 2001 has shown us that's a bad thing.
Robert DeBiase, RLDeBiase1@juno.com

Survival, adventure, discovery, knowledge, search for other worlds and extraterrestrial life.
Marie P. Castermans, mariepcast@aol.com

One planet is not enough.
Taylor Dinerman, Space Equity, tdinerman@spaceequity.com

To enjoy the ride! And the view of Mother Earth. To learn about the effects of weightlessness on the human body.
Joe Dambra, NYC

To establish a colony on another world to increase the chance of survival of our species (impacts!).
Joe Dambra, NYC

Because it's there. We owe it to Galileo, Copernicus, etc.
Tauno Etela

To colonize, solve diseases, meet and communicate with alien life forms and save our Earth and human race.
George Lewycky, NYC, grlewycky@yahoo.com

Precision manufacturing (material and biochemical); to study our planet, our solar system, our glaxy and beyond; to develop alliances with extraterrestrials.
Marcy J. Gordon, NYC mgordon@pipeline.com

Because it is simply part of our destiny and responsibility as conscious creative beings to explore as much of the universe as possible.
Dr. David M. Milch, NYC, drmilch@aol.com

Further exploration of space is the destiny of humanity! - to experience new things for positive change - enriching our lives and advancing our civilization. Without doubt, the future needs us to act now. Let space exploration be an example of our genius, our will to be better than what we are and an artistic statement of our desire to unveil Maya and utopia - to create a reality out of what our minds have already imagined.
Brian Andrew, NYC, captflippy@hotmail.com

We need to get into space in order to relieve this biosphere and to be forced into *creating* new biospheres. It is time that we allowed terra to heal--and time that we learned how to clean up after ourselves...in our own biospheres.
Adin Burroughs, adinb@earthlink.com

Human survival - if the human race stays on Terra, it will deplete all natural resources eventually.  To meet other life forms and see whether they have cultural lives similar to ourselves here on Earth.  To find out what happens if there's no gravity and no planets nearby.  Was Einstein correct in his theories?  To see if our homo sapiens species has developed independently on another planet.  Is it possible?
Susan Thau, susanthau@hotmail.com

Exploitation of resources.
Paul Roseman, PRosema@nycboe.net

Great Art has been inspired by the brilliance and beauty of our world. Imagine what human statement would consist ofgiven the endless possibilities that a new experience like space travel would offer! The universe could contribute to an unfathomable artistic movement!
Brian Andrew, NYC, captflippy@hotmail.com

I think the only way to learn more about the development of life in the universe is to find more examples, such as what may exist on Mars.
John Klos, john@klos.com, www.sixgirls.org

Because it's in our nature to explore.  Ifwe remain still we will surely die from atrophy.
Candace Pankanin, banditps@hotmail.com

Because it's always been in our nature to explore the unknown.
Eugene Cervone, adastracervone@iopener.net

We should go into space to justify the deaths of all the astronauts (including those on the Challenger mission) and Cosmonauts.  Otherwise some might say they have died in vain.
Susan Thau, susanthau@hotmail.com

For human survival.

Leonid Tkach, frompoletopole@yahoo.com

Our kids want to be known as the "Space Generation!"
Elaine Walker, www.ZiaSpace.com,

Humanity must expand into space or else we risk the wrath of our future generations.
Larry Klaes, lklaes@bbn.com

Maybe we will be able to manufacture our drugs, medicines, etc. in a gravity-free environment and save a lot of money and fuel (energy).
Susan Thau, susanthau@hotmail.com

We have an obligation, if not a need, to explore space. As more planets are discovered outside our tiny little corner of the Universe, it is imperative, not just for science, but for humanity, to develop the skills, technology, and most importantly the collective will, to reach out to these distant worlds. To reach this goal, we must further explore and colonize our own Solar System. To turn away from this path, this destiny, is to turn our back on the future. A self-chosen dark ages of exploration will begin. I think Kennedy said it best. "...not because it is easy, but because it is hard."
Andrew Kalat, akalat@kbltech.com

Personally, we should endeavor to explore the Heavens!  It is in our nature, it is our destiny !  What we learn...our children learn.  Money should not be a factor...Strength...Courage...Determination...and the will to move on will be the traits that will be carried on to the next generation.  Why should we go...you may ask.  The answer is simple.  We need to know, we need to grow and we need to expand our knowledge.  There will be great risk but without it...how can we grow as a civilization?  There are some who invite the risk for the rewards are bountiful !  We must go !
Veronica Ann, GeoBum@prodigy.net, http://sites.netscape.net/geobum72usa, Mars Society, Phoenix Chapter

Do it for our children, its in their best interestto know as much as they can about the universe around them. Space exploration holds knowledge that opens doors for the many.  The sooner we make a commitment, and meet the challenge of furthering humankind in space, the more quickly the benefits from this knowledge will be reaped by all.  Do it for science, do it for humanity, do it for yourself, but remember that the act of doing it will forever change mankind.  To do something that has never been done before beckons the human spirit.  There are untold ways in which the inspiring acts of future spacefarers will affect us.
Dave Aloisi, daloisi1@nycap.rr.com

The present is borrowed from future generations.  It is our moral obligation to develop our capacities, and the resources both of the Earth and our Solar System, to ensure that our children, and children's children, can enjoy far greater prosperity than we now know.  Otherwise, we condemn them to a future without hope.
Kenneth Murphy, International Space University, Master of Space Studies, Class of 2001, Strasourg, France

We should go to Mars to help unite the planet as one.  That was one of the reasons to go to the moon.
Eric Rosner, Eric.Rosner@tvland.com

Space is the most logical next step in human evolution.  Environments never stay the same and you never know when our reality will stop existing the way we know it.
Elizabeth Lysinger, Brooklyn, NY, USA

Humans should explore and settle space for untapped natural resources as well as for the economic and future growth of earth-based businesses. Space is a new business in a new economy for the new millennium.
W. Nicomedez, Brooklyn, NY USA

Space Exploration shouldn’t just be for the few.  It should be for everyone!
Hae Young Kim, haeyoungk@earthlink.net, Brooklyn, NY USA

Because we can. No, really: we have this amazing gift, the gift of our minds. We know that the stars are real, every one of them as real and potentially life-giving as our own sun. How can we know this and not go?
Grant Davis, grdavis@lconn.com, Houston, TX USA

Humans have been creatures of exploration since time immemorial.
Elaine Walker, Brooklyn, NY USA

To launch ourselves in space is a way "To Sail Beyond the Sunset", as poet Tennyson wrote; it is a way of extending our life force into the cosmos, a way of achieving immortality.
Linda MacDonald Glenn, lindaglenn@biomedlaw.com, Burlington, Vermont

To put it simply, humans tend to expand.  There isn't much land left ot expand into, save the occasional ocean and rainforrest, so there's really little...uh...space.
Mike Hudack, mike@mhudack.com, www.pocarisoft.com, NYC

It's hard to tell what all this [Sept 11, 2001 Attack on America] will do to our dreams.  A mission to Mars is still a great thing to do but would take some explaining in the current context.  And yet it's the type of thing that demonstrates our resolve and the ideas to which we aspire.
Pascal Lee, planetary scientist NASA Ames Research Center, CA

I had some big impressions about how war ruins peoples lives, and in this case how the attack [Sept 11, 2001] made all my projects seem so unimportant.  I realize now that is what the terrorists want.  So I know it is really important to keep focused as much as possible, to keep the vision [of human space exploration] alive.
Fred Becker, CA

If divine revelation has an enemy, it's we who advocate the need for verifiable data.  If those who would recreate the cultures of millennia past have an enemy, it's those of us building the cultures of the new millenium.  If isolationism has an enemy it's those of us who would join together in spreading through the solar system.  If despair has an enemy, it is the wonder we feel beneath the night sky, and our hope for reaching out to new worlds there.
